by this time, i had done more research into kung fu and chinese marital arts, as it was still unfamiliar to me. i didn’t know where to begin. consequently, i began to feel that same sense of lack-of-fulfillment i had felt before, and returned to the grind of work, school, and sleep. i bumped into a coworker ( uncle sickness ) who seemed to be seeking me out. the workplace was nothing but worthless, high school level gossip. he heard the rumors spread about me, and wanted to find out for himself. for the next several weeks, we chatted about the workplace environment and all of its flaws, philosophy, despite my youth and lack of knowledge on the subject, and all the wonders and hilarity we have stumbled across on the internet. then we started talking about kung fu. i became known as his “disciple” by our coworkers and around the building. they weren’t wrong. he shared his experiences with me and a couple fundamental principles and concepts of the two styles he practiced. the first, xing yi quan, a style that applies the mechanics of pole arms to the human body and hand to hand combat. it emphasizes soft or internal strength rather than hard or external strength, generating it in the body before directing it in a burst of power to your foe quickly. the second style, bagua zhang or “eight trigram palm,” emphasizes adaptation and circles within circles within circles. this style remains difficult for me to grasp and i have much more to learn before i become a proficient practitioner. rate this: share this: twitter google facebook linkedin tumblr like this: like loading... alex sender hello out there, uncle sickness here. my actual name is brad, as you may have noticed. i’m currently 39 years old, & have practiced chinese martial arts since my freshman year in college, way back in 1996. in the intervening years, i’ve learned a number of different qigong sets, forms of meditation, & various northern styles. my primary focus for the last several years have been the so-called “big three internal styles,” of xingyiquan, baguazhang, & taijiquan. in this modern world, many people point out that learning complex, advanced martial arts are a waste of time. you can just go out & get a gun, if it really comes down to it. but the real benefit of studying these arts, as ever, is the health cultivation aspect of the training. if not for the strength & health i had developed through practice in my 20’s, i would have died in my early 30’s from a series of bacterial infections, including sepsis. there is no doubt in my mind that i would be dead if not for my dedication to training, my desire to see how far i could develop my kung fu. now, i spend my days working to spread this knowledge, & share these invaluable techniques which are, as it says in a favorite book of mine, ” a perscription worth 10,000 pieces of gold.” i hope you all find something that both appeals to, & is useful to, you. if even one other person can benefit from these techniques, methods, & styles being shared, then i can consider my life worthwhile. thank you, & please, enjoy!
